Lorem ipsum is standard placeholder text used in design, publishing, and web development to fill layouts during the design process — it looks like natural text but is deliberately meaningless scrambled Latin.

What Is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is the conventional placeholder text used in graphic design, publishing, and web development. It fills text areas in design mockups and prototypes, allowing designers to evaluate layout, typography, and spacing without being distracted by the actual content. The text looks convincingly like natural language — it has word-length variation and sentence rhythm — but carries no meaning.

The standard lorem ipsum passage begins: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua." This opening has become so ubiquitous in design that many designers recognise it on sight and can identify a mockup or template at a glance.

Lorem ipsum has been in continuous use in printing and typesetting since the 1500s, and was popularised in digital form when Aldus Corporation used it in Letraset dry-transfer sheets and later in their PageMaker desktop publishing software in the 1980s. It is now standard in virtually every design tool, CMS, and publishing platform.

How Lorem Ipsum Works

The lorem ipsum passage is derived from "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work by the Roman statesman Cicero written in 45 BC. The original Latin discussed Epicurean philosophy. The lorem ipsum version scrambles and alters the original text to remove any intelligible meaning while preserving the natural rhythm and letter-frequency distribution of Latin prose.

The discovery that lorem ipsum was derived from Cicero is attributed to Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College, who in 1994 traced the passage to sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of De Finibus. Lorem ipsum generators typically produce variations of the standard passage, randomised to different lengths — paragraphs, sentences, or word counts — depending on the designer's needs.
