Lorem Ipsum for Layout Reviews: Controls, Formats and Limits
Choose paragraph filler for a limited layout check, compare plain and HTML outputs, and replace placeholders with realistic draft copy before publication.

Use Lorem Ipsum to check layout, then replace it with real copy
Lorem Ipsum is placeholder prose used to fill an unfinished text area. It can help you inspect paragraph spacing, wrapping and page density before the final writing is ready. It cannot tell you whether a reader understands an instruction or whether your real content fits.
Start with the Lorem Ipsum Generator for paragraph filler. If you want a few words for a writing exercise instead, use the random words workflow. Those are different tasks.
What are you checking?
Before generating anything, write down what you are checking. A draft article body may need temporary paragraphs. A button, error message or instruction needs words that explain its actual purpose.
- Paragraph spacing: clearly marked Lorem Ipsum filler works. It cannot establish comprehension or whether the final content fits.
- A button or an error message: write a realistic instruction describing the action or the problem. Random words are not a usable label.
- A finished page: use the actual draft copy, including long names and unusual cases. Filler is no substitute for reviewing that copy.
GOV.UK's interface-writing guidance explains why clear, direct wording matters. NN/G's content-testing guide describes testing comprehension with relevant readers and tasks. Use filler for a limited layout question, not as evidence that your copy works.
Set the tool's actual paragraph controls
- Select Standard Lorem Ipsum, Modern Variant or Corporate Style. These are stored vocabulary choices, not a translation or an article writer.
- Set Paragraph Count and Paragraph Length. The tool generates paragraphs; it has no separate exact-word-count or standalone-sentence mode.
- Choose Sentence Length. Short and medium settings vary the number of sampled words; they do not guarantee grammatical or meaningful sentences.
- Choose Output Format: Plain Text, HTML paragraph tags or Markdown.
- Choose whether to Start with "Lorem ipsum". The classic opening is applied to the first paragraph of Standard style only.
- Select Generate Lorem Ipsum. Inspect the result and use Copy or Download. If clipboard copying fails, the tool reports failure and keeps the output textarea selectable. Check the actual pasted text.
Changing a format, style or other option clears the previous output and disables Copy/Download. Generate again to create text that matches the new settings. Download requested confirms initiation, not that a file was saved to disk.
Compare plain text and HTML without guessing
For a reproducible local example, use Standard, one Short paragraph, Mostly Short sentences, classic start No. A test that forces each random draw to zero produces two identical six-word sentences. That controlled test demonstrates the format, not typical output or a saved browser session.

The two sentences have 12 whitespace-separated words. The plain result has 73 UTF-16 code units; HTML adds seven tag characters, giving 80. These are local string counts, not a form's accepted length or a visual width measurement.
Use real boundary cases before publication
A generated paragraph will not automatically contain your longest product name, a translated heading, a URL or an error message. Build those test cases deliberately and check them in the real design. Review narrow screens and text enlargement as well as a wide preview.

Mark unfinished sections in your review notes, then replace every placeholder before publishing. The themed Ipsum tool can supply a different vocabulary for a temporary mockup, but humorous filler is still unfinished copy. Do not present it as testimonials, product facts or meaningful editorial content.
