How to Use Upside Down Text on Instagram, Twitter, and Discord

Upside down text is a simple Unicode trick that flips your words vertically. Here is how to generate it and use it in bios, captions, and messages on any platform.

What Is Upside Down Text?

Upside down text flips your letters so they appear inverted — the way you'd read them if you held the page upside down. Each character is individually replaced with a Unicode character that looks like the rotated version of that letter.

For example:

  • Regular: Hello World
  • Upside down: pꞁɹoM oꞁꞁǝH

Because the output is plain text (not an image), it copies and pastes directly into Instagram, Discord, Twitter, WhatsApp, and any other text field.

How to Make Upside Down Text in 3 Steps

Where to Use Upside Down Text

Instagram bio — an upside down name or tagline is a memorable visual trick that makes a bio stand out in search results and on profile pages.

Twitter / X — a tweet with upside down text is unusual enough to stop the scroll. It works especially well for punchlines where the "reveal" text is written upside down.

Discord usernames and bios — an upside down username looks distinctive in the member list and is a common style choice in gaming and internet culture communities.

WhatsApp status — upside down status text is a playful way to show personality without images or emoji.

The Unicode Trick Behind It

The upside down characters come from different Unicode blocks. Some are phonetic extensions (IPA characters) that happen to look like inverted Latin letters — for example:

  • ɐ (U+0250) is the upside down version of a
  • q looks like upside down d (used directly)
  • ǝ (U+01DD) is the upside down e
  • ʇ (U+0287) is the upside down t

Not every letter has a perfect Unicode upside down equivalent. The generator uses the closest visual match for each character.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting every character to flip — numbers and some special characters don't have upside down Unicode equivalents. They either paste as-is or are skipped by the generator.
  • Not testing the copy direction — some generators reverse the text order (so it reads correctly when flipped), others don't. The TextToolbox generator lets you choose.
  • Using it in a field that strips Unicode — certain form fields and older apps only accept ASCII. In those cases, the Unicode characters will appear as boxes or question marks, or be rejected entirely.
