How to Create Glitch Text (Zalgo / Creepy Text) for Social Media

Glitch text — also called Zalgo or creepy text — adds an eerie, corrupted look to your messages. Here is how to generate it and use it on Discord, Reddit, and more.

What Is Zalgo / Glitch Text?

Zalgo text is a creepy or glitch-style text effect where diacritical marks (accents, umlauts, combining characters) pile up above and below each letter, making words look corrupted, broken, or supernatural. The name "Zalgo" comes from an internet meme, but the actual technical mechanism is Unicode combining characters layered on top of standard letters.

A normal letter like "H" becomes H̴̢͙̼͙̱̝̘͇̙͔̫̪̯̠̰̆ͦ̾͒̐ͩ͒̂̿̐͒ͪ̐͜ͅ — the same letter with dozens of combining diacritics stacked above and below it.

How to Create Zalgo Text in 3 Steps

  1. Open the Zalgo Text Generator on TextToolbox.
  2. Type or paste your text into the input field.
  3. Adjust the intensity level — Low, Medium, or High — to control how chaotic the output looks.
  4. Click Copy and paste anywhere.

The generator adds Unicode combining characters (codepoints U+0300 to U+036F and others) to each letter in your input. The more combining characters added, the more corrupted the text appears.

Intensity Levels Explained

LevelWhat It Looks LikeBest For
LowH̃ẽl̃l̃õSubtle glitch effect, still readable
MediumḦ̷̓ĕ̸l̵͑l̷̓ó̷Clear corruption, creepy feeling
HighH̴̢͙̼͙̆ͦ̾ͩ͒ẽ̷̲͓̥̯̲͌ͮ͊l̸̯͔̫͔̱̝̈́ͩ͆l̡̲̫̦̫̰̏͐ͧ̏ö̶͕̠̺͕͍̐̽͑Maximum chaos — barely readable intentionally

Low is good for stylized usernames. High is good for horror-themed messages or shock-value posts where the unreadability is part of the effect.

Where Zalgo Text Is Used

Discord — Zalgo text is popular for spooky or edgy Discord usernames and bot messages. It renders correctly in Discord's UI on desktop and mobile.

Reddit — Reddit comment threads in horror subreddits, ARG communities, and creepypasta forums regularly feature Zalgo text as part of the narrative style.

Horror-themed social media posts — on Twitter and Instagram, Zalgo text in a caption or bio immediately signals a horror, gothic, or dark aesthetic without any image editing.

Gaming usernames — some games allow Unicode in display names, making a Zalgo username stand out in leaderboards and lobbies.

Memes and shock posts — Zalgo text in a meme image or tweet adds a "cursed" quality that is widely recognized in internet culture.

Creative writing and ARGs — alternate reality games (ARGs) use Zalgo text as a narrative device to suggest corrupted data, alien communication, or supernatural interference.

Is Zalgo Text Safe to Paste?

The combining characters in Zalgo text are standard Unicode — there's nothing malicious in the text itself. However:

  • Some platforms strip it — platforms with strict text sanitization (like some CMS editors) may strip combining characters, turning your Zalgo text back into plain text.
  • It can break character limits — one "letter" with high-intensity Zalgo diacritics may be counted as dozens of characters by the platform's character counter.
  • Some older apps crash — extremely high-intensity Zalgo text with hundreds of combining characters per letter has historically caused UI rendering issues in some older apps. Modern apps handle it fine.

Test before posting on any platform you haven't tried before.

The Technical Explanation

Unicode diacritics are "combining characters" — they attach to the character before them without taking their own space. Unicode normally limits how many combining characters can appear on one base character, but it doesn't enforce a hard maximum. Zalgo text exploits this by adding dozens of combining characters to each letter, overwhelming the rendering engine's expectations and creating the visual corruption effect.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting it to display identically everywhere — Zalgo rendering varies by font and platform. What looks perfectly chaotic on your screen may appear slightly different on someone else's device.
  • Using high intensity for usernames — a high-intensity Zalgo username may exceed the character limit for usernames on many platforms. Use low or medium for display names.
  • Pasting into a form that rejects Unicode — some bank websites, government portals, and corporate email systems reject non-ASCII input. Zalgo text will either be stripped or rejected entirely in these contexts.
