What Is Lorem Ipsum and Why Do Designers Use It?
That strange Latin text in every design mockup has a 500-year history. Learn what Lorem Ipsum actually means, where it came from, and why designers still use it.
What Does Lorem Ipsum Actually Mean?
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..."
If you've ever looked at a website template, a software mockup, or a new WordPress theme, you've seen this text. It looks like Latin, but if you try to put it through Google Translate, it mostly produces gibberish.
That's because Lorem Ipsum isn't standard Latin. It's scrambled Latin.
The text was derived from a real book — De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("The Extremes of Good and Evil"), written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. Sometime in the 1500s, an unknown printer took a page of Cicero's text and scrambled the words and letters to make a type specimen book.
It survived five centuries of printing presses, made the leap to digital typography in the 1980s, and is still the standard today.
Why Do Designers Use It?
The primary purpose of Lorem Ipsum is distraction. Or rather, preventing it.
When a designer shows a client a mockup for a new website, they want feedback on the layout, the colors, the fonts, and the visual hierarchy.
If the designer uses real English text (like "Welcome to our company, we sell software"), the client inevitably starts reading the text. They'll point out a typo. They'll argue about the marketing message. They'll get entirely distracted from the visual design.
If the designer uses repeating text like "Content goes here. Content goes here. Content goes here," it creates an unnatural visual pattern. Real paragraphs have varying word lengths, natural spacing, and a specific "color" (density of ink/pixels) when viewed from a distance.
Lorem Ipsum solves both problems:
- It looks like natural, readable English text in terms of word length and letter distribution.
- It's completely unreadable, so the brain ignores the meaning and focuses purely on the visual design.
When Not to Use Lorem Ipsum
As useful as it is, relying too heavily on Lorem Ipsum is a common design mistake.
Don't use it in final reviews: Before a site goes live, it must be tested with real content. Real content is often longer, shorter, or clunkier than perfect Lorem Ipsum blocks, which can break fragile layouts.
Don't use it for microcopy: Button labels, navigation menus, and error messages should never be Lorem Ipsum. A button that says "Consectetur" tells the user nothing about what the button does in the mockup. Always draft real UI copy.
Don't accidentally publish it: The number one risk of placeholder text is forgetting to replace it. A quick Google search for "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" reveals thousands of live, professional websites that accidentally published their placeholder text.
Alternatives to Standard Lorem Ipsum
Sometimes standard Latin is too formal for your project's vibe, or you just want to make your development team laugh when they inspect the mockup.
The internet has created hundreds of themed placeholder generators. For example:
- Hipster Ipsum: Uses words like artisan, kombucha, sustainable, and vinyl. Great for modern coffee shop or startup mockups.
- Zombie Ipsum: Uses horror and undead vocabulary. Fun for October campaigns.
You can try these variations using the Hipster / Zombie Ipsum Generator on TextToolbox.
